Venturing Outside your Comfort Zone
A short reflection on the comfort zone. Why try new things? What limits us?
The comfort zone is a place where we feel great. Nothing can happen to us when we’re in it. Comfortably ensconced in our cozy little living area, we don’t even have to think. Automatically, we communicate with the people we have known for a long time, we go to the same workplace every day that we have been going to for years, we eat the same meal that we enjoy so much.
In fact, the comfort zone means repeating the same experiences we’ve already had day after day, without questioning. It’s seeing new opportunities as something negative. It’s a way of missing out on the many great opportunities the world has to offer, in favor of a life that may be a little duller, but without risk. And making this decision is justified: why trade a simple, happy life for one of risk and chaos?
Because it’s the richest experience you can have. Discovering and exploring what you don’t know seems fundamentally important to feel proud of yourself and your life when it’s over.
I ask myself these questions because I want to die with a smile on my face, happy with everything I’ve accomplished in my life.
Embarking on an adventure outside your comfort zone requires a great deal of courage. You have to be comfortable with failing and being rejected. Because that’s what we risk every time we try something, and it’s probably what’s going to happen to us most of the time.
The way people perceive our opinions and actions should not limit our growth either. It’s far from easy to free ourselves from it, but it’s fundamentally crucial. Humans tend to judge and feel judged all the time. Other people’s opinions count – far too much.
Success – Achieving success in this adventure involves staying motivated and not getting discouraged by any challenges that may arise. Being in tune with yourself, your needs, and your wishes.
Achieving what you want to accomplish without feeling constrained by any social fears.
So I decided to take on a project.
I’m going to make a list of all the activities, whether silly or serious, that will get me out of the comfort zone whenever possible.
The goal: discover new experiences and stop weighing social failure and rejection so heavily.
